Veritas 8C unset light on/power LED constantly flashing.?

Hi, We've had a veritas 8C alarm set up in our house for the last few years (it has been installed when the previous owners were living here). It's given us no problems as we were given the code and instruction manual.

Today though the alam has just stopped. There's still power, but the unset light is constantly on. The Power led (green light) constantly flashes and entering our code does nothing.

Is there anything I can do to reset the system?

Sounds like there has been no mains voltage to the panel and the battery is low. The power light flashes when there is no mains present or the battery is low.

The opinions I express are mine and are usually correct!

(Except when I'm wrong)(which I'm not)

Just read your reply Breff, is there anything I can check for? Would switching the mains on and off help?

Noticed that the cover was slichtly open. The alarm is in the cupboard under the stairs and we've been moving boxes in and out of there so could've knocked it.

Pressed the cover back into place and the unset light has gone off - just the flashing power LED now. No sounds when I enter the alarm code, no ability to set the alarm.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

when did you first notice this fault if today etc i would be looking again in the cupboard have you caught the fused spur or tripped out a mains fuse

if the outside sounder starts sounding soon then its definatly a lack of mains

have you had to enter the code previously today if so its indicative of the lid tamper which may not be resited properly

any thing you can remeber about when you first noticed the fault can help

Only noticed it today but been working at home for the last couple of days so haven't needed to set the alarm.

By the outside sounder, do you mean the kind of sound you get when the alarm goes off? Is this likely to happen and if so, what can I do to turn it off, don't want the alarm going off all night.

If it's a dead battery, can I just get a new one from Maplin or an electrical specialist? Could it be a bust fuse inside the control panel?

We've had no power cuts and all other electrics in the house are working ok so if its the mains, then I'm guessing that its either a fuse or perhaps a dying battery then.

Just been under the stairs to have a look and could smell something coming from the control unit - opened it up by the two screws and saw that the battery has completely corroded at the connector.

Will call out a service engineer!

okay worse case senario

you should disconnect one side of the battery from the alarm wiring now but do it carefully - dont t urn off the mains first -

there shouldnt be a too much risk of a shock but the gel leaching out of the battery can be corrosive and definatly keep away from eyes and mouth

i personally would also power down the system due to the burning smell but you may find that once the battery is dissed the panel will start to cool down ( it may be very hot right now) you could check after an hour but any doubt power it down

IF YOU DO POWER IT DOWN THE SOUNDER MAY START OUTSIDE

this should stop after around twenty minutes but i cannot guarentee this if it doesnt you may need an engineer tonight and it WILL cost you

get it repaired and have it serviced annually for exactly this reason they rarely fail at 8.30 on a monday morning

Thanks for the advice - The smell wasn't burning and the system wasn't hot at all, just the smell of the gel leaching out I guess. Had a look and saw that the fuse on the right hand side has blown.

I've disconnected the battery at both terminals and the system appears to be dead now (no Lights or LEDs).

Is it safe to leave like this until I can get an engineer out? Is the alarm likely to go off in the middle of the night?

You mentioned 'power down the system' - how do I do this?

Which seems to indicate that there is no mains supply to the panel

Yes, if it were to go off it would have done when all power was removed, and indicates that your bellbox battery is faulty or not connected

It sounds as if you have done this, to be certain remove the mains fuse in the spur or panel

Hope this helps, does seem like you could benefit from a visit by an engineer to revive it though, especially as the Veritas has a habit of defaulting itself when mains is removed and the battery goes flat

have you been working in the house doing diy etc or have you had anyone else in it sounds like a clssic mains reconnect with a duff battery as long as all is quite dont worry tonight but deffinatly look for an engineer to call

dont be tempted to just get a battery from maplins etc it needs to be checked profesionally
