Camera For Noctural Outdoor Use

Featured Replies

My parents live in a remote rural area. They have recently had prowlers take tools out of a couple of adjoining sheds. Nothing of major monetary value was taken - but they are more concerned and upset with the fact that someones prowling about on their property.

I wondered if there was a security camera on the market that would be of sufficient quality to work at night time outdoors - one that would be of sufficient quality to ID the prowler (who is likely to be someone known to them).

Any suggestions for an affordable solution would be greatly appreciated.

What do you class as Affordable.... And depends how much coverage you require, at the end of the day you get what you pay for.

You will need an IR camera / IR lamp, but which one depends on the Area to be covered.

For a budget external camera with IR lighting and a vari focal lens, you can get them for about

Most cameras and DVR's around that price if you are sourcing them yourself are going to be unbranded imports. I haven't personally used anything like that so I cant really help ther, maybe other members here have more of an idea and can help you with specifics.

If you look around the net, use google and search for terms like;

vari-ocal IR camera day night external.

At night day/night cameras will usually switch to black and white mode, if you find one that says its a 1/3" ccd chip then a 35mm lens will basically be what you see, 15mm will be will make everything half the size and 8mm half again.

I have decided to go for either the Geovision GV600-4 or GV650-4 DVR card.

How major is the difference in quality between these two?

@deefadog: What model cameras were they that you got? How good is the night recording in total darkness? How far away can people be from the camera and still be able to ID them? Would you happen to have a link to the e-bay traders website
