24VAC or 12VDC

Featured Replies

I'd like some opinions please, on which is the better solution: 24VAC or 12VDC...

It seems to me, possibly nievely, that DC is the better idea. DC can be carried using CAT7 cable (or CAT5e if you don't mind loosing your C5e cart).

If you use 24VAC, are you subject to the same regs as would affect an electrition?

What sort of distance limitations are there for each?

Are there any safety issues?

I'd love to hear some thoughts for both sides please!

Thanks a lot to all!!

IF i remember correctly 24vac is still SELV (explained elsewhere in this forum).

24 naturally has less voltage loss due to smaller current so you can use longer cable runs with same awg.

+ if you use cameras that support linelock they will then sen pic fields at the same time which is usefull if using video switches.

Ditto

As Georg said and another plus point is its easier to get 24v AC housings with heaters than 12v DC housings.
