And in response to Lurch,  The guy asked for advise over several makes / models. Iin the course of the discussion, he was advised that if he was unsure about his competance to fit a high end panel like the galaxy to consult a professional installer to final fix and / or commission it.

Ah, missed that bit, just making sure everyone knows what's going on! Sorry very much.

Hello,

Many thanks for all your advice.

I have, in the end, bought a Texecom Premier 88 panel (I know it wasn't on my original list) because:

  • it seems to have the flexibility and (at least some of) the high end features of panels like the Galaxy
  • having read the install manuals, it seems to have an extremely friendly interface with the programmer (and the subsequent user)
  • it has steel rather than plastic casing on control panel (unlike the Veritas series)

Only downside was the cost was higher than the other ones on my list, which were generally from Ebay, whereas this was brand new from a trade supplier.

Thanks again for your advice,

Mike

Sorry, I'm lost here. Is everyone telling a non-competent person to install a Galaxy as a first alarm install job? Wouldn't you rather they fitted a Scantronic or Texecom so that it's more likely to work, or is that the idea, get everyone to fit Galaxys badly so someone else can go in for the refit\maintenance?

I wouldn't consider a galaxy 8 or 16 as anything special. If anything i'd say its as easy to install and program than any other standard panel. Full LCD display makes programming easy and the large panel means its easier for DIYers to cram that birds nest of cabling in.
