Hi

Just making an introduction. I have dipped into this site a couple of times to try and understand Security/Burglar Alarms and have been impressed with the information here. It's a good site, I'm always impressed with professionals that are prepared to give their time to us DIY'ers. I am a Property Developer in the real world, as yet I have not had the need for a Burglar alarm in any of my properties but I have just taken on some student lets and am considering my options on those. I cant think of a suitable configuration for a student house, 4/5 sharers, any ideas?

$My main purpose for visiting this site is for my home where I am looking to install a DIY Alarm.

So I'm off to post some questions in the DIY forum.

Great website, thanks for all the info so far.

welcome to the site but what you need is a common lobby panel, ie 5 bedrooms with sensors in each bedroom, 2 or 3 in the halls/landing etc and a keypad in the hall

each tennent would enter his/her code and set his/her room when all are set the landing/halls would automatically become active, but not a basic panel so might be better of finding an easier way if your doing this yourself. But anyway welcome and post your questions in the relevant forum

Thanks for the reply, that system sounds like the sort of thing that I would like to install. Finger in the air time but what sort of price would a system like that cost installed, or in fact just supplied? I guess that it would be a professional only install?

You wont get one like that just supplied, as for cost it would need a survey.

The programming for a situation like this is probably beyond an average electrical installer, your cheapest route would be to have your own electricians run cables as recommended by an installer and then they fit the ancillaries afterwards and programme the system. Given you develop and manage properties the correct system could allow you to control certain aspects from your own office and not need a site visit for new students arriving or leaving.

A search of this site will give you numbers of local installers who can provide this service for you.

cheers

Thanks OH.

I thought that it might be the case.

Does anyone out there fit alarms into student houses? It seems that everyone out there is recommending that we don't install an alarm, but if you can set it by room it seems like a good idea to me.

Any experiences?

We have installed several alarms to student accomodation, but I have to tell you that the idle sods can't be bothered using the alarm..... It means pressing 4 buttons! lol
