RG59 or cat5 on short runs??

Featured Replies

Which gives the best quality signal on say a 25M run RG59 or cat 5?I can see the advantages of cat 5 ,small size, power supply, multiple signals, etc ....also would a balun improve the picture on a short run.

Over that sort of distance there would be absolutely no difference in picture quality, cat 5 would be the more expensive option by far in this situation having to buy baluns whereas a 25 m length of rg59 will cost peanuts.

I agree with montee rg59 upto 200mtres no noticable video loss, cost of coax about £*** but use cat 5 with balun passive transceivers and cable is still £*** but baluns cost about £*** with no obvious advantage stick with coax rg59 unless there are cabling issues which are better suited to cat5,regards Paul.

<EDIT:- Sorry after a complaint from another trade member Ive had to remove the estimated product costs due to this being in public>

Agree totally with the other 2, absolutely no advantage in using Cat5 unless you may need extra cameras in the same position in the future, RG59 is fine & cheaper.
