Smartphones hit by Trojan virus 5:39PM

Symbian-based phones including Nokias using the Series 60 platform are again the target of a new mobile phone virus that will stop the phone dead if it is rebooted.

According to Finnish security experts F-Secure, the Trojan virus Fontal-A - a variant of the Comwarrior virus - has no propagation mechanics but may be manually received from file-sharing networks or via memory cards in an infected file called Kill Saddam By OID500.sis.

If executed, the file will install itself as applications and fonts on the system. This will damage the application manager so that no further applications can be installed. The font is also corrupt and it is this that causes the phone to stall when it is rebooted.

Should this happen the only method of recovery is to reformat the phone which will cause it to lose all data.

Users of infected phones (that haven't been rebooted) can weed out Fontal-A with the company's mobile antivirus software available on its website.

Don`t use it but might of use to you
