Decent DIY system

Featured Replies

Not really, personally I wouldnt touch any DIY system with a barge pole, as they are much more trouble than they are worth.

If you want a decent system, go to your local electrical wholesaler, probably City Electrical Factors, and ask them if they have a Texecom R8 control panel, then ask them for an Odyssey 1E bell box, a couple of door contacts and some Reflex sensors. And if you want the autodialler, I can recommend the Texecom Speech Dialler... but all this will not be cheap, expect to pay around £200 - £300 for all this.

In all fairness though if you dont want to see any of the wires and want to make sure that it will work if someone attempts to break in then I would suggest going to a local alarm company (not that you are incapable, but alarm companies do this day in day out and will know exactly what you want (if their reputable)).

I agree with Dale. Texecom isn't bad stuff and you'll get backup from them unlike ADE

I installed my first system in my house this year. I chose a Veritas R8 Panel.

It handles 8 zones. I recommend you read the manual several times before starting.

I read the manual and then tried to contact local alarm companies to install, as soon as they discovered I had pre-purchased the hardware they weren't interested.

My only option was to install it myself and I managed and it is working fine.

I did need the support line once and they were helpful.

Definately recommend the veritas R8, also purchase an LCD Keypad to make programming ALOT easier.

Good luck

Personally... I favourite is the premier at the moment. Still playing with mine so make it do cool stuff... like automatically lock the doors when the panel is set.
