Sorted it in a round about way!

The problem was only visible via the spot VCR loopthru. As mentioned before my colleague changed the VCR but for the same model, a TL350. It turns out that anything slightly over 1V p-p and the TL350 can't cope. I've upraded the VCR to TL700( slight overkill but it was in my car ) and all is now well.

I went up into the attic...I found a Stradavarius & a Picasso. Unfortunately.....

Stradavarius couldn't paint, and Picasso made a shocking fiddle.
