If you just enter your code when the alarm goes off. Make sure the contacts are connected properly. To change the battery switch off the mains to the panel open it up ( tamp alarm will go off ) enter your code, change the battery close the panel make sure it sets / unsets. Job done.

York based security systems engineer.

Did the alarm work correctly before he started?

If yes, then it is most likely that he has got the wiring wrong.

If you know what zone number it is then have a look in the panel and see what colour the wires are that are connected to on that zone. Then in the conatct the two wires should each be connected to one of the two silver screws respectively. There may also be a tamper circuit, in the panel follow the two wires from the zone until you find the white sheaf of the cable there will be two other wires going to the tamper circuit, possibly in a loop with the other detectors. Go back to the contact and twist these two wires together on one of the brass screws and refit the contact.

You also need to make sure that the contact is aligned correctly and that the gap between them is not too big. they should not be touching(3mm gap)

Now try the alarm.

If the fault was existing then it would be easier to get a proffessional in to fix. When did you last change the batteries in your alarm.
