Check the pins on the Scuzzy cable. Strange things can happen if a pin becomes bent for some reason. I have a 2 speed Yamaha drive that seemed problematic. The Sprite listed the drive on the boot-up screen but told me there was no drive connected when I wanted to burn images. The cause, one single pin had bent very slightly on the lead and where it connected to the Yamaha, the pin had pushed away the plastic on the connector between 2 of the connectors holes, thus shorting to the next connector hole.
