Smoke Detector Wiring

Featured Replies

Yet another question...

Before I finish my prem48 install I'm going to wire for smoke alarms/heat detectors. At present there are battery alarms installed but I am replacing them so they work with the alarm system.

What sort of wire should I run for each fire detector? What wire from the panel? Is it just alarm wire? And also do they need mains power running or do they work from the 12v off the panel?

cheers yet again.

What make/model detectors will you be using? If they're the Texecom ones, standard 6 or 8 core alarm cable will be fine. They require a pair of wires for the 12 volt supply, a pair for the alarm circuit and one wire for the optional latch circuit if you are connecting more than one to the same zone, although they should be on sperate zones ideally.

ALSO, if you are using these as your sole means of fire detection, you should have a couple of internal sounders to wake you up, as they don't have their own built in. Just make sure they're not rediculously loud so that you can hear other people shouting over them if they go off.

If its for your home then ordinary alarm wire is fine when used with standard 12-volt detectors.

Other more stringent requirements are set out for landlords, new builds etc.

It's 12v detectors, I'll run alarm wire ready for the install. Don't want to have to start running cables later after i decorate.
