  1. Hey guys I found this site and I read a lot of interesting articles there. I hope you also find some which are interesting to you These are the two areas I found particularly informative for me: http://www.securityelectronicsandnetworks.com/articles/alarms http://www.securityelectronicsandnetworks.com/articles/installations Be warned though, some of their reviews are a bit overly enthusiastic IMO.
  2. (but I still don't know what alarm latch and pre alarm fetures mean
  3. 1. this is a side interest I do on top of studying at uni, working and private life. 2. setting up a company is costly and cumbersome here and even after setting up I would have to do a lot of bureaucratic paperwork every year. (tax papers even if I have no income, commerce chamber charges etc.) and all of this, while I have 0 intention to ever do this professionally or commercially, just to satisfy my curiosity. On top of all that I think in order to be registered as a company setting up alarms I would have to make a course 1.5 years long, costing around 800 quid and taking up 3 days every week. I looked it up that is the training for alarm technicians. At least that is the straight way to setting up company related to alarms. Probably there are other ways but I'm not aware of them. I don't have so much money for it and I don't have so much time for it.
  4. I thought about that and did ask the sales rep a couple of stupid newb questions, but they have a dim view on DIY setups and keep recommending me that I should consult an installer. Which of course isn't helpful because I don't want it to be installed anywhere apart from a big thick plywood board in the shed.
  5. Oh, now I think I udnerstand why you said it looks like a sales pitch. I've been asking about satels because I got a satel panel with sensors and I'm curious about them. And as I learn more and more I sometimes run into questions, and if I can't find the answer I ask it I don't recommend satels, I don't not recommend them. I'm curious because I wish to learn more by reading up and playing with the panel. Plus why would it be a sales pitch? I don't think a newbie asking questions about it is the best way to advertise a product :D
  6. @Yeti: see second post, click the upper link then on the site here is a list of fetures. The third mentioned feture is pre alarm.
  7. ohh, I understand now Vince, thank you for clearing that well I'm not affiliated with any maker of alarms
  8. I see Not sure on the answer to your question TBH, I'm only at the very beginning of the learning curve. All I know is what I gathered from Satel's site, descriptions and the manuals. The only other place I found resistance values in the installation manual is where it describes that with CA-64 E and CA-64EPS types of zone expansion sets I should use the 1.1 Ohm in dEOL and 2.2 in EOL setup, but not mention of what should be used apart from the afore mentioned wide gap.
  9. Satel pre-alarm feature: http://www.satel.pl/en/product/207/AQUA%20Plus,Digital-PIR-motion-detector alarm latch feature: http://www.satel.pl/en/product/204/GRAPHITE,Advanced-digital-motion-detector
  10. Hey guys, I was wonderign what brand of sensors (PIR, combination, glass break etc.) do You use and prefer? You can choose more than one so you can mark all of the brands you like. Share your opinion If you have other brand you prefer, or want to mention specific type you are especally fond of after the voting, do so in the comments
  11. Nope I just re-cheked to be sure. Satel Versa installer manual version 1.03 pg19 (Chapeter 3.6) (In case you find an english version) The value of closing resitance in EOL and 2EOL loops is programmable between 500 Ohm and 15KOhm. I'd snap a picture but it's not in english. @Yeti: Thanks for the insight @Vince: Mine didn't include any resistors, but I called satel and it's supposed to have included 2.2k Ohms 5% ones and 1.1k Ohms 5% ones. So I think I'll go with those. Why two types btw? Now I'm confuesd again: goes in the PIR in eol? Or is it just so I can wire up 2 in one zone with different resitance values?
  12. Hey guys! I've been going through catalogues and I found these two features but they aren't explained anywhere. alarm latch feature pre-alarm feature Can somebody explain to me what they mean? They were mentioned as features of PIRs.
  13. I know, I was supreised... Does the wide range has any significance? (I mean does that mean sth apart from being flexible when it comes to EOL resitances ) I was wondering whether it's better to put in a big or a small resistance.
  14. datadiff: Here Bosch is aimed at high end customers and more industrial solutions. FWIW I heard their stuff is pricey but really good. Why are you surprised that Jablotron isn't a bigger player? Timmo: I'm not sure, I'm not familiar with menvier keypads, but the pyronix keypads I know don't look too much like this IMO: http://www.satel.pl/img/products/xl/VERSA-LCD-GR.jpg
  15. I found out what resistors value is recommended. In case someone needs it in the future: it's supposed to be between 500 Ohm and 15 K Ohm.
  16. No texecom :/ I wanted to start on Aritech, a friend recommended that, but that would be very hard to source, or to get advice, since it's a brand noone heard of here. Paradox, DSC and Satel are the thre most widespread ones, then comes Jablotron, Bosch, Crow, Bentel. In decresaing order of their populatity Pyronix, Napco in traces at best, at the fringes. Some others exist but really extremely rare. I opted for the Satel Versa 10 as my first learning panel, because I could get it cheap and it's widesprea enough to get information. Here's some info in case you are curious: http://www.satel.uk.com/alarms-versa-pcb-versa10.html DSC was the first one here after the iron curtain went down so that's why it's such a major player I presume.
  17. Hey everyone, Do you guys have experience with DSC or Paradox or Satel alarms? I'm just starting to dig myself in to the topic of alarms and I intend to start by trying to set up a very simple very small Satel alarm for the shed. But later on I would like to learn a bit more and the 2 main companies offering courses are the alarm makes DSC and Paradox here. I have neither the time or the money to do both, plus I think at this level that might confuse me more than be helpful. If you are familiar with eiter (or hopefully both) which one would you recoomend? Points I would consider are for example: User friednliness, installer friendliness, quality of their products (from panles to sensors), fullness of the product range (if they offer solutions for most needs). I know most people are partial to the brand they know the best. Thanks for your input
  18. Hey Guys, I have a few newb questions. Firstly,do I only need to put resistors at each sensor (EOL setup)? I’ve read the manual, but it doesn’t specify this… (I’m about to use a Satel Versa 10 panel.) Or is there other places in an alarm system where resistors should be put? Am I right thinking I need 1 resistor, in series, at the furthest part from the panel (for example in the housing of each sensor)? Which wire should have the resistance? (The Alarm one, in this case it’s called „NC&C”(?) NC&C both signyfy that no R is needed don't they? ) If it’s a combined sensor (PIR & glass breaking) then do both NC&C inputs need a resistance added at the end of the wire? What if the sensor has an input called „EOL”? Does that mean that the resistance is included and no need to add one to that input or that i need to put the wire with resistance into that input. Secondly, what resistance should I use? I heard of using 3.3k Ohm, DSC panels use 5.6 kOhm AFAIK others 2k2... Is that specified with each brand/panel? Is smaller resitance better? It’s mostly to learn and for DIY fun, so that’s why such a newb doesn’t get professional help.( Introduction ) Thank you very much for your help, I am getting quite confused, as you may have noticed
  19. Hey guys, I’m new to alarms, but I’ve spent a few years in physical security (all kinds locks mostly, tiiny bit of safes). (At first just as a hobby then as a part time job as well.) I always fancied alarms, since shildhood porbably, but unfortunately I’m not an electrician or an engineer so apologies for the possibly dumb questions. My career started when I made an alarm from a rope which shook a bell when the door opened as 10 maybe. So I'm actually a veteran if only the years from the first attempt is counted I got interested in alarms a loong ago, but my attention only recently shifted. Summer holiday is coming up and I want to explore new field and learn new skills. I plan to install one in the shed to learn, experiment and have some DIY fun. I don’t intend to ever do this profession professionally, I don't think I will have the knowledge in the foreseeable future to do it well, but it comes along nicely to my other hobby, collecting and learning about (mostly exotic) locks I also like reading, gardening. Not weeding tough
