Called on a customer to add a motion detector to their system.

What could be simpler...

On arrival I attempted to access engineering mode (0 [engcode]), no joy!

I tried resetting the system using the customer code and then tried to access engineering again, still no joy!

I then decided to tamper the main panel using the customer code to silence the alarm.

Upon lifting the lid free of the anti-tamper switch I got nothing, no bells, no tamper message, nothing!

I unplugged the anti-tamper switch from the PCB, still nothing!

Decided to have a poke around with my DVM, AC mains OK, transformer output OK, battery charge voltage OK, 13V output at 8V?

At this point, I decided to down power the system (mains and battery) and disconnect the mass of red and black wires connected to the 13V output.

Powered the panel back up (mains only) and guess what?

The panel defaulted back to factory settings and I lost everything.

On a more positive note my 13V output was back to what I'd expect it to be and the anti-tamper device was now working.

I pain stackenly re-connected each set of red and black whilst carefully monitoring the voltage level and everything seemed fine.

I programmed the system back in as best I could and everything went swimmingly well after that, put the new detector on, tested it, job's a good 'ne.

But why all the pain at the beginning?
