Intruder Alarm Engineer

Featured Replies

Hello Everyone,

I'm new to the forum so first of all hello!

Well I'm wanting to get into the Industry as I really want to become an alarm engineer. A bit of background info about me. I'm 29 years old and have had an interest in intruder alarms from a very young age. I installed my first DIY system when I was about 14 in my mum's house. Nothing exciting it was an A1 Omnicron panel, few pirs/contacts & external bell. I then went on to do a few installs for members of my family and friends in their own homes. I did work experience with an electrician when I was at school and also worked weekends with another electrician when I was 16 assisting with basic jobs like changing sockets, light fittings etc right through to assisting with a full re-wire. I also assisted with several alarm installs. I did start a 3 Year Electrician/electronics course at college when I was 16 but left to go into full time work so I could support my family during a rough period. I'm interested to know how you all got into this type of industry, what you started off as and what position you hold now. I've tried several times to get work with alarm companies in and around the York area but never had any success due to lack of experience I guess. I'm currently in full-time employment and current circumstances mean I would be unable to leave to go back to college. I suppose I'm asking for some advice really on what you lot think I need to do in order to better my chances of becoming an engineer. I appreciate that at the very least I would be looking at a trainee type of role so any guidance would be appreciated.

cheers

Ross
