  1. Hi,

I'm planning on taking a new step and hopefully running my own fire alarm company. Yes you might not agree that I'm just doing the one discipline but I've had 10 years experience within the fire industry, I've designed, sold, installed, commissioned and maintained systems. I'm all there with the job side of it.

It's just getting the work, where would I start? Fire alarms isn't really a word of mouth is it. What ways of advertising do you use?

I'm planning on doing my own work also being a subbie for a local well know f&s company.

All I need to know is the running business side of things.

How do I calculate budgets if I don't even know what I could earn that month? Yeah you'll probably say I'm unprepared but shall I base it on few services, small works, 1 install etc.

If I am currently employed and being paid by PAYE. Can I register as a sole trader and tax? Is that possible?

I have all tools, van, cert pads, ladders. Everything I should need to lift me off the ground. It's mainly advertising and getting it running. Any pointers? Yes you'll probably put me off doing it but I'm keen, I know it's a 24/7 job, I'll never stop but it's worth it. I'll work my ass off

  2. Quite a bit which will be the same if you are part time (like me) or not.

    Efficiency Insurance

    Public Liability Insurance

    Business type car/van insurance

At least some stock as spares against call outs

Ideally a separate landline or at least the appearance of one that directs to a mobile

    Book-keeper (or DIY)

Accountant (DIY can be done, but not always the best way)

Vetting if your hoping to be approved

Ltd. status if you're hoping to be approved

That's just off the top of my head.

Thanks for info, taken onboard! Do you get a lot of business?

  3. Have you done a BP? how many systems do you need to install/maintain to earn a livable wage? what is your forecast for year on year growth and how do you propose to attain it?

Yes I have calculated everything I need to know to prepare myself and my business. It's all noted thank you, thanks for the tips but I've done it

  4. the term is realistic not negative, what experience you got installing/servicing/selling/pricing jobs up have you got years of seeing customers and giving them a service you can promise to maintain if they come with you etc etc

I've been done install, service, commission, quoted big jobs that you wouldn't believe. I can't say the company name but I've land one 40,000 job which we did over Christmas period and just about to land another big job. I've got the experience, I'm not as thick as you think. I know what I'm talking about. I know the standards inside out as you should too. Of course I can maintain a customers site, I have the experience and competence to do so

  5. I admire your guts, but remember 4 out of 5 new businesses fail in the first year. Gaz is giving you good advise, my first business failed miserably, and I had over ten years experience before I went it alone again, I had managed other peoples businesses for several years too, 14 years on and I am still learning new stuff

Why did your first business fail? I know 4 out of 5 business fail but that's due to lack of knowledge and resources. They obviously jump the gun without the correct resources etc. However I'm prepared, I have all the paperwork, company name, sales literature and other literature and so on. All I need now to do now is van, insurance and advertisement but I'm taking my time planning and doing it carefully making sure I don't miss anything so I'm not setup to fail

  6. One thing you'll learn as you mature is to listen to the negative comments and hopefully take something from them. If you only want to hear positive comments pop over to diynot.com

I'm open to negative comments and take them onboard. I took them onboard and I said I'd prove him wrong, that's not me saying I don't like negative comments.

  7. the thing with whistle is the years of experience in all fields before he went alone, being an apprentice you won't have that head start, walk before you run

I can't wait to prove you wrong, I've had 5 years in the trade and I've done all aspects of it. Dont comment if your going to be negative please
