IFTTT is just a logic programme with associated devices.

As above easily done (Ring for example) but depends on budget.

Any great guides on how to easily do this, or should I turn to the Great Google God!?
    Thx!

There are plenty of deterrents out there already lights on timers, lightswitch's that switch on and off randomly iftt ect ect. You can even buy a TV simulator that looks like you have a TV on in the house. It all depends on what type of burglar your likely to get, a professional burglar is unlikely to be fooled by deterrent techniques, whereas a drug-fueled opportunist is likely not to notice. In our line of trade you get to go to a lot of houses that have been burgled and you would be surprised on what does happen. I certainly would not leave my house unalarmed nor would I go to bed without part arming my alarm, the one thing that does deter burglars is the thought of getting caught and a wailing siren and flashing lights tend to bring attention to them. The bell box should be enough deterrent if they haven't spotted that they wont be taking much notice of lights coming on in the house every time they walk towards it

I have the TV simulator: with curtains neatly pulled, I think it looks effective from the outside....but really only works to show that there is someone home during the evening - if on all night it would fool no-one!

Reason behind my thinking: our area has had a recent spate of scrotes just walking down the streets at 2-5am trying car door handles, and the occasionally a front door.

Sure, an alarm would help with the latter, but frankly I believe that if lights come on in the house as they approach, I believe they would walk on past.

Serious criminals? they will always find a way in....although luckily we don't have any really valuable goods or cars to stand out as making us a specific target (I don't believe).

Hence wondering about that way to link an easy-fit PIR to a pluggable unit (which we can move between rooms if we want).

IFTTT would do this easily, not sure of the effectiveness though.

So the detail behind this is what I would like: are there any easy-fit PIRs that would link to such an IFTTT mechanism, and a plug that would work with it, and HOW would I achieve this (given zero practical knowledge of IFTTT really!!)

In the Leicester area if there are any security specialists to speak to: I haven't had time to wander this site to find any yet....

    Cheers!

  3. Okay, so you think my idea of a mechanism to scare potential burglars into looking next door is no good.  That's fair enough....although we have been here over 20 years without an issue: I really want to just make our house less appealing than those around us, & think this could be a good way.  Perhaps *especially* if no-one else does this: if I were a miscreant approaching a property and one or two lights came on as I got close, I would probably chose to leave....but then I am perhaps not high on drugs etc, so who knows!

FYI, we have an old alarm system (albeit it got a bit temperamental so we rarely switch it on!)

    Anyone else?

Maybe I need to invent something for this!

  4. Hi all,

Just in from a slightly feisty neighbourhood watch meeting.....& with some ideas, I thought I would sign up here in case there are any pointers for me!

My simple thinking is that if someone is casing a joint, anything that disturbs them or makes them feel they are being watched would help to put them off.   External security lamps are obvious, but perhaps ignored....

    So.

I think a great idea would be for external PIRs to integrate with socket-based lamps in selected rooms to switch lights on for a pre-set 5-10 minutes.  The lamps could be in rooms NOT slept in - so a lamp in a spare room comes on when a PIR is triggered.  Maybe even have a decent dog barking recording to leave on when you are NOT sleeping at home!

Sounds simple.  Might need wifi reach, or could another link be used easily?
Perhaps an IFTTT application of some sort (I've never dabbled!)

If anyone has good threads to suggest or ideas to share (maybe such things already exist!?) - feel free to point me in the right direction!
    Cheers
