My home network powers 23 computers using an internal network and an external 108Mbps wifi (http://www.netgear.com/promotions/WGT634U.php), with a great big arial on the back of the house I also use a BlueSocket for the WiFi which secures it alot, although the BlueSocket cost was a 4 digit figure (http://www.bluesocket.com/solutions/index.html). My connection is powered by Blueyonder 3Mb and 2x Nildram 1Mb ADSL lines, all together for good redundancy. All this was only recently setup though, so its still my best toy 23 Computers you say? It costs around another £10 per month and was wondering if anyone had any thoughts (good or bad ) about it. Reason for upgrade is the X-box shares the ADSL and it would improve the occasional lag problems when both X-box and PC are running games on line. CompostCORNER Posted August 9, 2004 Share Posted August 9, 2004 My ISP is Karoo. A service only available here in Hull and the surrounding areas due to BT not operating in Hull. I pay £28.99 per month and get a 608kbps connection max downstream and around 400kbps upstream. I've seen better packages out there from BT and the likes outside the Hull area but considering my contention is very favourable, the fact that I get 580kbps speed more or less constantly, I can't grumble. Work has a 2meg pipe by the same provider and ironically, due to their city crentre location, they get slower speeds than me during the main day. They get a max of around 1.5meg once it's gone 10pm as everywhere else is shut. For my cash, I also get a nice 20mb worth of web space. Unfortunately, I'm not too sure who is at the moment, but it's definitely not BT. A 512k with a better ISP that's more geared towards demanding use would be an upgrade from where you are now, and probably for not much more than you're paying now. OTOH, changing some settings in the modem\router or even changing it can help, as can upgrading the routers firmware, if you're using one... sometimes! If you've got everything running at peak efficiency at your end, and it's still slow, then I would look at changing ISP's before splashing out on the 1 meg connection.
