Other Careers?

Ive got to the point where i want out now. But my qualifications will no doubt hinder me. I have 9 A-C gcse's. Various electrical and fire qualifications. But thats about it. I have 4 years experience at installing and maintaining Intruder,Fire,CCTV and Door Access systems. Is there any scope for moving into another field of work given my security experience or is it back to college for a-levels and then some sort of degree? Or a career with the armed forces?

cheers.

As far as career goes, obviously depends what you want to go in to. I fitted alarms for 6 years then was made redundant 3 years ago. Now I make a good sparky. Most customers/client comment how good I am at running cable without excess damage. My alarm fitting experience make me a cut above alot of other tricians (who are good sparkies too by the way).

I dunno how old you are, but as Chorlton said, lifes not a rehearsal............this is it, if you dont thoroughly enjoy what you do for a living, change it before you get into a rut and its too late.

Oh, yeah. one other thing.

Qualifications aint the be all and end all. Theres a lot of field servicing jobs within the electronics / electrical industries your probably well capable of with a little training. you should be used to dealing with clients, paperwork etc etc after 4 years in the job.

Just look hard for one and show that your willing to learn. and look after the company vehicle of course.

Good Luck.

cheers for all the replies but its mainly the driving thats getting to me. I dont mind it but not as often and far as i do.

if you like the job but not the miles maybe just a matter of finding the right vacancy.

I've never done more than 25,000 a year and that was several years ago now, probably just 12,000 year the last few.

i used to love driving but now it's more of a pain so can see your pov on that front.

get your details into david at MIA (see banner add) and see what comes up.

not the ideal time with the "curret economic climate" and all that but good luck

cheers

I once had a job covering the whole of the UK, did 80,0000 in 11 months i left because most of my life was spent in the car. Even did installs in Belfast and Lisburn.

On the plus side collected loads of Esso tokens and got loads of free stuff.

Sounds like you're just going through a 'fed up' phase. We all get it once in a while.

No point jumping unless you're sure you're going to land somewhere better.

Depending on your age and responsibilities the worlds your oyster as they say, you can do whatever you want to do.

If your not sure hit the road do some travelling around the globe and see what lights your fire would be my advice.

The armed forces aint for someone who isnt sure, thats a job that demands commitment to just pass the basic training.

To be honest,I wish tae feck I could totally get away out of this because it bores the bejeezus out of me now.Having done very well to get where I am in 20 years learning and doing what I know best, I am now in the catch 22 of having a reasonable salary - I'm "stuck" because I am where i am at an age that I am and can't jump ship.

If you haven't past the age of no return (ie - 40!) then go with your gut and find a job/career that you want to do.

In hindsight and in my case? - primary school teacher where you get a reward of seeing realisation passing over a childs face!

Sometimes the fed up phase isn't just that tho!

Armed forces???I'd go for the RAF or Navy myself - tbh, you're less cannon fodder in those.

TBH I'd get out now, think of it like this. 15 years ago CCTV was a lot more specialised, and it paid well. Now most engineers wouldnt know how to back focus a camera, set up gamma correction, a lot dont even seem to understand the concept of 75 ohms termination. they dont need to. They screw the camera on the wall, and point it in the right direction.

Similar with Access Control. All the job satisfaction is going fast.

10 more years, every Sparks, Plumber, Decorator will be installing wireless kit.

Your a young man, the worlds your Lobster. Run. Now !

Yes, the grass often seems greener on the other side of the fence. But just ask yourself what is it they use to cause this.
