hi guys,

i've been using Kaspersky Internet security V6 for the past year, bought it as was on offer with 3 licenses, had anti-spam filtering big hate isue for me, now coming up for renewal. i can get off amazon for

I have had to repair so many machines that thought avg was protecting them i no longer recommened it.

We use Sophos on the network and fint it very good, But thats a server client version, what the desktop ones are like i have no idea.

for about the last 5 years. Why paid for anti-virus when a good one is available free

i ran the single user trial version of SOPHOS, i know its one of the classier brands as the wifes firm are agents and sell it so i know it's abit pricey.

seemed to me very resource hungry, update slows my machiine down to a crawl, and this on a dual core

thats the figures, and usually from some one you know than a stranger . you tend to trust them more but dump junk mails.

dodgy warez and porno sites are flooded with it, trojans, worms, maleware - so i'm told

My advice is stay with Kaspersky but if you have to move on the basis of not understanding a warning move to NOD32.

Free (and most paid products) just don't have the update frequency required for today's Internet environment, let alone the quality of the product itself..

Mine checks for updates hourly, daily should be an absolute minimum - most programmes update weekly or even less frequently.

we update our servr over 10 mins. It has caught some brand new ones.

As long as you wait till your updated before using your machine and all the data it uses is older than the update than no you dont need to update more often.

After you get a virus on your avg machine... then you will see that yes you did need to update more often.

AVG Free for me.

At the end of the day, if you are vigilant enough with your browsing and your attachment opening, you could almost get away with nothing. A decent hardware firewall, like built into most ADSL router/modem units, and the odd scan from Spybot, AVG v8 and Lavasofts Adaware, and a bit of common sense, and you should be OK.

I used to have Norton but it's bloated to the point that it would slow down my system at times so I binned it. Another tip I've been told about, not sure if it works but makes sense, is to run your scans with your PC in Safe Mode. I've seen Norton find stuff but then not being able to remove it due to the program with the problem in, up and already running. Safe Mode starts only the essentail basic programs so it's supposedly better for Norton to remove nasty stuff. I guess the same applies with any program you use to remove undesirable stuff from your PC.

Just because it's not the same as yours may be does not make it bad.

I too use AVG free with daily update, adaware SE and spybot and have had no problems on the laprtop I'm using since bought in 2006 not my main PC since it was bought in 2005.

Now it may be down to luck or the fact i don't visit dodge sites I don't know but it works for me so I'd happily advise it to others.

Just because it's not the same as yours may be does not make it bad.

I'm not against everyone having their own point of view but that doesn't make their advice good.

To suggest that it is okay not to use any A/V is bad advice, in fact I would say that it is worse than bad advice it is irresponsible because it carries with it the risk of passing viruses etc onto others you communicate with.

Many people are totally unaware of the viruses infecting their computers or of the risk of other computers using their's to infect other computers, keylog and worse.

You may not agree but it's still bad advice and I stand by that, without wishing anyone to take personal offence, its not 'personal'. its important to the whole Internet experience for everyone.

No, it's not my opinion, it's fact - advising people not to use an anti-virus is bad advice.

But again it's not personal, use an a/v or don't use an a/v but if a virus wipes your bios and renders your pc useless or hijacks your pc and uses it for its own purposes or starts logging all of your keystrokes you'll eventually regret not making efforts to stop it - problem is it may not only be you that it affects.
