I've used this in the past very simple to install and no problems with it cracking gear. They send a guy out to do a site survey when the kit turned up it was all preprogrammed all I had to do was power up the control panel fit the antenna 2 one with a yellow strip and one with a red strip as per they instructions whack up all the detection gear and it all worked fine.

We've been doing radio stuff for years. It very much depends the size of the job. EMS without a doubt is the best (if not the ugliest) on the market.... It does work but you have to realise (and tell your customer) radio systems are generally higher maintenance than hard wired systems.

If you want to network panels, use voice enhanced sounders, synchronise the messages etc etc , then you might want some independent advice....!!!

cheers for the info, just a small system, no networking, no linking to anything. Does any body know if there is a maximum operating height for the smokes. One of the ceilings is approx 40-50 ft high it's the main staircase 7m squared.

Suggest you obtain a copy of BS 5839 for starters....... If you are designing this job you best be sure you are adequately qualified and competent to sign the design certificate ......... !!

If you mean is there a maximum height cos they're radio, answer is no. They work to the same heights as hardwired equipment.

Call EMS and they will carry out a full radio survey of the site prior to quoting the equipment.

At this height you are then talking between 12 and 15 metres which is (in normal design spec) outside the permitted 10.5m (as stated by GJM).However,if the system is category P and has fire service attendance is within 5 minutes then the height can be increased to 15 metres (or 18 metres if this height is not greater than 10% of the total ceiling height).

You would be better looking at either a beam detector (which unfortunately means installing cable at one end) or you could use air sampling (common trade name VESDA) and install it in polished copper pipe for aesthetics.
