Some cameras I installed a couple years ago have problems now with IR whiteout at night caused by the acrylic covers getting scuffed from wear & tear. They have the IR inside the dome around the lens. It doesn't seem to take much to get micro scratches in the plastic - I assume from cleaning &/or wind borne dirt. Is this a common problem & should I have stayed away from in-built IR?

I believe this is a problem, I have some Vista cameras at home and they have done the same.

Can you not just replace the covers, are spares available?

more commonly, the seal between lens and cover fails/shrinks/distorts etc. This allows the IR reflections into the lens thus giving the white out.

the dome camera that looks over my koi/stergeon pond came with IR inbuilt into it but i unplugged the lead to the ir bit so ir doesnt work as like others have said it had a white ring round the lens which made video picture look terrible at night, luckily tho with the pond brick lights lit up during the night the irs arnt needed but i tried it and didnt think much of it at the time, imho its better to have a seperate ir lamp fixed to the building along side each camera

This is quite remarkable Colin, for once I agree with you, best to have seperate IR lighting

yes it`s a common problem but a couple of years ago LED`S were the answer to everything, today it`s "sens up" technology ................. tomorrow it`ll be something else.

its always a compromise.

Yep-sort out the scroats that require us to have cameras in the first place-chemicaly castrate them so as their inbred desires/bloodline cannot continue, incarserate them for the whole length of their sentence!,whilst they are inside visit their homes/affiliates homes and remove all goods of resellable value to repay the victims of their crime-then torch their home-oh and then give them the death sentence just when they thought they were going to have three decent meals, play pool/snooker/ps3/watch telly/exercise/be warm/take drugs etc.......all when they are in prison!-fecking joke this countries law..................Now that MAY prevent some crimes........... :ninja:

Nope Mr H, I am just a little disillusioned with our country/the state of it at the moment-as I dare say are a lot of fellow taxpayers/countrymen...

stergon and sterlets are a member of the same family its just that sterlets are the babies of the family (sterlets) grow to approx 6 feet long but are limited to the soze of the pond, where as stergeon will grow to approx 10 feet maybe a bit more depending on conditions, but the type we have in the pool is sterlet (my typo) heres a photo to prove it o you all, Ps the pond also has different species of fish in there as well, (ghost koi, goldfish, grasscarp, shubunkin, theres approx 16 fish in total, and a sterlet/ miniature stergon, also in the small tank we reer small fish to larger fish like a junior tank, then they get transfered to a large tank indoor, then the following year when old enough they will go into the pond outdoor, the pools holding about 4000 litres of water, hees a couple of shots of the phone camera from late last year.
